Lower North Island

The Quiet Edge

Rugged coastline and ridgeline views

5 destinations

The lower North Island is where you go when you want to get away from the crowds and find the raw edge of New Zealand. Long empty coastlines, dramatic headlands, and big views from high ridges are what this region does best. It takes a bit more effort to get to some of these places and that is exactly why they are so good.

Bridal Veil Falls

Bridal Veil Falls

A thin ribbon of water drops 55 metres straight down into a pool at the bottom of a lush green gorge. The short walk through the bush to get there is lovely on its own and the falls are even better. It is easy to reach, free to visit, and one of those hidden spots that is genuinely worth knowing about.

Manu Bay

Manu Bay

Raglan has one of the longest left-hand surf breaks in the world and Manu Bay is where the best of it is. Even if you do not surf, watching experienced riders work their way down a long clean wave is something special. The town is relaxed and full of good food and the whole vibe is very hard to leave.

Te Mata Peak

Te Mata Peak

You can drive almost to the top of Te Mata Peak and walk a short trail to the summit with big views over the Hawkes Bay plains and vineyards. The rock face on one side drops sharply away and gives it a dramatic edge that makes it feel much more serious than a short walk. Sunrise and sunset from up here are genuinely worth setting an alarm for.

Cape Palliser

Cape Palliser

Cape Palliser is the southernmost point of the North Island and you really feel like you are at the edge of the world out here. There is a lighthouse at the top of a long flight of steps, a seal colony on the rocks below, and the Wairarapa mountains behind you. The drive out along the coast is half the fun.

Castlepoint Lighthouse

Castlepoint Lighthouse

A white lighthouse stands on a rocky headland above a wide beach and a small sheltered lagoon. The coastline here is raw and on a stormy day the waves crash hard against the rocks below the light. It is a long drive from Wellington but one of the best drives in the lower North Island.
